B2B SaaS colleagues smile and lean over branding concepts and colour palette at a table in a bright office, discussing documents in a relaxed, collaborative meeting.

Before a founder decides who to hire for their branding, there's usually a question in the back of their mind: what should this actually cost?

It's a fair question, and a surprisingly hard one to answer. Very few branding agencies publish prices, freelancers range from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand, and a brand strategy consultancy might quote by the day, by the project or not at all until you've had a call.

This guide sets out what each option typically costs in the UK in 2026, what you get for your money, and how to choose the right one for where your SaaS company is now, especially if you're heading into a launch, a raise or a bigger sales push.

The short answer

  • Freelance designer: around £500 to £1,000 for a logo, or £1,500 to £5,000 for a starter pack with brand guidelines.

  • Brand strategy consultancy or consultant: usually priced by the day or by the project, for positioning, messaging and the thinking behind the brand. Design is often separate.

  • Boutique studio or small branding agency: around £5,000 to £20,000 for a full brand identity with strategy, identity system and assets.

  • Large branding agency: a complete rebrand with research, positioning, identity and rollout typically starts around £10,000 and can run to £50,000 and more.

These ranges come from Whito's 2026 research into UK branding costs, which brings together current UK pricing guides. Where a project lands within each range depends on the factors further down.

Brand strategy consultancy vs agency vs freelancer: what's the difference?

The three options aren't really competing for the same job. They do different jobs, and the right one depends on what your brand needs next.

A freelance designer

A good freelancer can create a strong logo and visual identity quickly and affordably. If you're pre-launch, testing an idea, or simply need something professional to get going, that's often all you need.

The trade-off is that design usually follows a brief you write yourself. If you're not yet clear on who you're for and what makes you different, the brief is where things get stuck, and the design can only be as clear as the thinking behind it.

A brand strategy consultancy

A brand strategy consultancy or consultant focuses on that thinking: your Brand DNA, your positioning, your brand persona and your messaging. You come away with clarity on what to say, who to say it to and why you're the right choice.

This suits founders whose visuals are working but whose words aren't, or who want a clear foundation before briefing designers, writers or a new marketing hire. The thing to check is how the strategy turns into something your team can use: some consultants hand over a document and step back, while others stay involved as it's put into practice.

A branding agency

An agency brings strategy and design together, so the thinking carries straight through into your identity, guidelines and often your website. Large agencies add research teams, campaign work and rollout across every channel, which makes sense for well-funded companies rebranding at scale.

For a growing SaaS company, a boutique agency often sits in the middle: strategy-led like a consultancy, with design under the same roof, but at a scale and price that fits a startup.

What drives the cost of branding?

Whoever you choose, the same few things move the price up or down:

  • How much strategy is involved. A logo on its own costs far less than positioning, persona and messaging worked out first. The strategy is usually what makes the design land.

  • Research. Self-reported answers from the founder are quicker and cheaper. Researched foundations, with competitor analysis and input from real buyers, take longer and cost more, but give you more to work with.

  • What you get at the end. A logo file is one thing. Guidelines, messaging frameworks, pitch decks, landing pages and social templates all add to the scope.

  • Who's doing the work. Experience matters. You're paying for judgement as much as hours.

  • Timescale. A tight deadline means more people working at once, which tends to cost more.

How to choose: start with what your go-to-market needs

Rather than starting with budget, it helps to start with the next big moment for the business. Founders don't usually set out to buy brand strategy. They want a launch, a raise or a sales push to land, and the brand is what makes that easier or harder.

  • If the next step is launching for the first time, a freelancer or a lean package can get you looking credible quickly.

  • If buyers like the product but struggle to explain it to their boss, the gap is messaging, and a brand strategy consultancy or a messaging-led package is the right fit.

  • If you've raised and the brand still looks like the pre-seed version, you need strategy and identity together, which points to a boutique agency.

  • If you're rebranding a well-established company across many markets, a large agency has the scale for it.

Whoever you speak to, a few questions help:

  • Can you walk me through your process? You should know what happens at each stage and what you'll have at the end.

  • Have you worked with companies like ours? SaaS buyers and sales cycles come with their own challenges.

  • How will this help us sell? Good brand work should make go-to-market easier, not just look good in a document.

  • Who owns the work? Make sure the rights to your logo, brand assets and guidelines transfer to you once the project is paid for.

Where Emotion Brands fits

Emotion Brands is a startup branding agency for B2B SaaS and sustainability-led founders. We sit in the boutique seat: I lead the brand strategy, working alongside a team of designers, so you get the thinking of a brand strategy consultancy and the design of an agency, without the overheads of a large one.

Our work follows our strategic branding framework, and our startup branding packages are fixed price, so you know the cost before we start:

  • Persona Messaging™, from £6,500 (4 weeks): a messaging and story framework rooted in buyer psychology, for when the visuals work but the words don't.

  • Persona Sprint™, from £8,500 (6 weeks): a strategic brand identity sprint, for when the pre-seed look needs levelling up before a launch or raise.

  • Persona Pro™, from £18,500 (10 weeks): the full strategy and rebrand across all five stages, built on real research, for teams who need complete clarity and credibility.

If you'd like to know more about the role itself first, our guide to what a brand strategist does covers it, and our Ultimate Guide to brand strategy goes deeper into each stage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does branding cost for a startup in the UK?

From around £500 for a freelance logo to £50,000 or more for a complete rebrand with strategy. For a growing SaaS startup, a full brand identity with strategy typically costs £5,000 to £20,000.

Is a brand strategy consultancy cheaper than a branding agency?

Not always. A consultancy often costs less up front because it focuses on strategy rather than design, but you'll usually need a designer afterwards. A boutique agency that does both can work out similar overall, with the advantage that nothing gets lost between the thinking and the design.

Should a SaaS startup hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer suits a first launch or a tight budget when you already know what you want to say. An agency suits founders who need the strategy worked out as well as the visuals, usually once the company has raised or is heading into a bigger go-to-market push.

How long does a branding project take?

A logo can take a couple of weeks. A focused strategy or messaging project usually takes four to six weeks, and a fully researched strategy and rebrand takes around ten weeks or more.

Do branding agencies publish their prices?

Few do. Most quote after a call. We publish starting prices for our startup branding packages so founders can plan before they get in touch.
